Renewable energy sources
Renewable energy sources (RES) have been used much more recently. The main reason for this growing popularity is harmlessnes of RES to the environment as well as their inexhaustibleness. These features distinguish them from conventional sources, which use is a major cause of alarming climate changes, and whose world's resources will sooner or later become completely exhausted. It is estimated that the longest, because for almost 220 years, will last coal deposits. For much shorter time - over 60 years - the extraction of natural gas will be continued. It will be possible to extract oil only for approximately another 30-40 years. The prospects of the exhaustion of all these energy sources, as well as the damage to the environment caused by their use, make people seek the alternatives right now. The growing popularity of renewable energy sources is due not only to environmental but also economic considerations. Increasingly lower costs of installations for generating energy from RES and low cost raw materials (biomass) or free materials (wind, sun, water), support from government programs and the European Union make the profitability of such investment to be distinctly visible.
Do renewable energy sources have any other advantages except for the above listed values, such as inexhaustibleness, environmental safety and low prices? Yes they have, and they are important. Unlike conventional sources they are available around the world (although not always to the same extent). Nationally, renewable energy production can become independent of imported fuels, thus increasing energy security. On the local scale, the use of RES allows a reduction of surpluses in agriculture (for example, potatoes and oilseeds), development of barren land. It also contributes to reducing unemployment. The most significant advantage of RES remains their eco-friendliness, the fact that they don’t increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and thus don’t aggravate the concern for climate change, the possible effects which we cannot fully predict.
